When you’re considering the purchase of a new radiator cover, there are some things to consider. First and foremost is that you are probably wanting to hide that ugly radiator in your space. Or, at the very least, make it not such a focal point in your space. This is not always the case with radiators. Some antique cast iron radiators look good enough to highlight in your space. These older radiators have that advantage of the Victorian styling with the scroll work or even animal and cherub figurines on them. Great pieces, but these may not be an option or even your wish.

If you’re heart is set on some type of cover, then you need to ensure that you get the right fit. Because they come in various styles, the first thing you need to get is your radiator’s dimensions. You’ll need to get the depth, height and length and know where your valves, stems and other hardware is. Once you have these, you’ll want to add at least 1” to those numbers. This gives you ample space for slight corrections and an appropriate fit.

What you are looking for is a cover that will be the closest fit to your measurements. You don’t ever want to try and force this cover into place. Depending on the type of cover model you are looking for, you will find that some have a simple click in place type of lid, while others have a hinged lid. The hinged models are typically standard on more custom covers. They may also be insulated.

It is not commonly known that these covers can also provide for increased heating efficiency in your space. The way this works is that instead of having the heat directed upward with the natural convection forces of hot air rising, these covers project that heat out into your space, through the vents or louvers. This provides you with more effective heating. The finish on these covers comes in a variety of enameled and colored finishes or in faux wood styles. You can certainly find some style to meet your home’s decor needs. And, for only $75 USD for basic and $400+ USD for more custom radiator covers, they are a great investment!
